Asked about persistent accusations that he wasn’t born in the United States, the president responded, “I can’t spend all my time with my birth certificate plastered on my forehead.”

NBC anchorman Brian Williams also asked Obama about conservative commentator Glenn Beck’s rally on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on Saturday. While he didn’t watch the event, Obama said, “I think that Mr. Beck and the rest of those folks were exercising their rights under our Constitution exactly as they should.”

The president acknowledged the ralliers’ concerns about the economy and terrorism and observed, “Given the fact that, you know, in none of these situations are you gonna fix things overnight, it’s not surprising that somebody like a Mr. Beck is able to stir up a certain portion of the country.”

Obama added: “I have no doubt that we are gonna rebound and rebound strong. But when you’re in the middle of it, and if you don’t have a job right now, it’s a tough, tough situation.”

While starting Moroccan community associations across the United states over the last few years, community leaders were faced with one major obstacle: ignorance of the utility of community service and rejection of volunteerism.

It has happened times and again upon initiation of the seed to create a community association that individuals come at you with this: what is your organization going to do for us? what have you done for us? what will be my benefit from this?

So faced with ignorance, many have had to adopt a new approach: “build it and they will come”. That is, you build your organization with a few like-minded individuals and you use whatever resources you have available to you to start your project. Start it from home and gather around your idea a few willing individuals who knows that one of the foundations for the success of Americans is their firm belief in the great importance of community service and especially volunteerism. It means understanding that volunteering time and effort certainly pays off. It means having the doors of your organization wide open to the community to come with practical ideas to do something for the community in particular and the country in general. It means entrenching in our individuals the desire to offer someting without saying: I need to see immediate results in my own life.

Our community is very able of being organized. However, that only will materialize if we inculcate in them the spirit of volnteerism and to explain to them that your offering time and effort to your community is not a waste of time. It is not really a free service for others. It is not catering for others and promotimg their interests at the expense of your own self. Instead, you will, if you are an ambitious person, no doubt one day need a letter of recommendation for your job application, for your application for admission to college, a testimoney of your good character or community service if you happen to have problems with the law. These are just a few advantages of being part of your community, of being available to help it, of sacrificing time and effort for it.

How great communities are when individuals are aware of the importance of volunteerism, when members come to you and say: what can we do to help? I am putting myself at your disposition, at the service of our community, at the service of our city, at the service of the country and the world! For blessed they will be when they win the respect of the country no matter if not from the community. They will be appreciated by the citizens, by ordinary fellow citizens, by local, city, state, and federal public servants, but most importantly within their own society and their own community.

How great it is when you volunteer for your community to help the weak and the vulnerable with whatever advice that can help them deal with the hardships and the difficulties that lie their way.

And O how great to it when you help a sick woman who falls into the fangs of a fraudulent spouse who promises salvation to poor new-comers who flee poverty, injustice, and lack of opportunity!

Volunteerism sets your heart free, controls the greed of the mind, and elevates you to positions of productive altruism. Volunteerism in America is the cornerstone to build and rise. It is that gift which promotes your creativity, stretches your imagination, increases your opportunity, connects you to circles of empowerment, advances your goals, and relieves you of many a spychological and material burden. It alleviates your circumstances when in times of legal stress. It protects your community against bigotry, discrimination, and injustice. It presents your community as a unified front for the peace and the security of your community and all communities around you. It proves your goodness of heart, your disposition for giving and helping, and your seriously seeking to be a good citizen.

How great then it is to be a volunteer for your community, to teach a GED, English, or Arabic class, to clean up a street, a garden or a park, to join a discussion group, to organize a cultural day, a soccer tournament, or an interfaith-dialog meeting. How great it is then that you will be recognized in city hall, in courts, in local and national community centers, and above all, in your society and in your community.

Blessed be you then that you are a volunteer or seeking to become one. I commend you if you are one and

wholeheartedly advice you to diligently seek to become one if you have not attained that level of prerequisite awareness as of yet. and remember: if you have reached that high level of prerequisite understanding and awareness of the importance of community service and volunteering without creating much fuss and ado about where you are in the structure of the organization, you are being practical and productive: a True Volunteer.

Go then and seek to be one. May light be shone on your path.

Arab immigrants began coming to the U.S. is sizable numbers during the 1880’s. It is estimated that nearly 3.5 million Americans trace their roots to an Arab country. Arab Americans are found in every state, but more than two thirds of them live in just ten states (California, Michigan, New York, Florida, Texas, New Jersey, Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia). Metropolitan Los Angeles, Detroit, and New York are home to one-third of the population.

Arab Americans are as diverse as their countries of origin, with unique immigration experiences that have shaped their ethnic identity in the United States. While the majority of Arab Americans descend from the first wave of mostly Christian immigrants, Arab Muslims represent the fastest growing segment of the Arab American community.

Contrary to popular assumptions or stereotypes, the majority of Arab Americans are native-born, and nearly 82% are citizens. While the community traces its roots to every Arab country, the majority of Arab Americans have ancestral ties to Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, Egypt and Iraq.
